Suicides at the Foxconn Plant

According to the New York Times, workers at a factory in Shenzhen, China, owned by Foxconn (a company that manufactures iPhones, iPads and other devices for Apple) regularly work sixteen-hour, seven-day work weeks.

They stand until their legs swell and they can’t walk, and they perform repetitive motions on the production line for so long that some permanently lose the use of their hands. To cut costs, managers make workers use cheap chemicals that cause neurological damage. There has been a rash of suicides at the Foxconn plant, and 300 workers recently threatened to jump off the roof over a safety and pay dispute.

In short, as one former Apple executive told the New York Times, "Most people would be really disturbed if they saw where their iPhone comes from."

Mark Shields, a self-described member of the "cult of Mac," started a petition on Change.org demanding Apple exert its influence on its suppliers to improve working conditions for the factory workers that make iPhones, iPads and other Apple products. Click here to sign Mark’s petition right now.

Apple knows it can play an important role in ensuring safe and fair working conditions for the workers at its suppliers, like Foxconn. In 2005, the company released a supplier code of conduct, and it performs hundreds of audits each year in China and around the world to confirm its suppliers are meeting the code’s expectations.

But that’s where Apple’s commitment falters: the number of supplier violations has held steady year to year and Apple hasn’t consistently publicly stated which suppliers have problems or dropped offending suppliers.

The bottom line, Apple executives admit, is that they’re not being forced to change.

One current executive told the New York Times that there’s a trade-off: "You can either manufacture in comfortable, worker-friendly factories," he said, or you can "make it better and faster and cheaper, which requires factories that seem harsh by American standards. And right now, customers care more about a new iPhone than working conditions in China."

That means public pressure is the only thing that can force Apple to ensure its suppliers treat workers humanely. If enough people sign Mark’s petition -- and tell Apple they care more about human beings than they do about how fast the company can produce the next generation iPhone -- the company could be convinced to make real change for the workers at Foxconn and other factories.

A Russian scientist claims to have spotted signs of life in the most unlikely spot in the universe: Venus, the arid, scorching second-closest planet to the sun.

Venus is widely considered to be lifeless and barren, thanks in part to superheated clouds of sulfuric acid that cover the planet. NASA’s Solar System Exploration site says the scorched world has temperatures higher than 880 degrees Fahrenheit (471 degrees Celsius) -- that's hot enough to melt lead. Indeed, probes that have landed on Venus survived only a few hours before being destroyed by the incredible temperatures, NASA notes.

New Monument to the greatness of Wichita’s Corporations

During the Cold War, the west was quick to show us pictures of great monuments to great leaders in the Soviet Union, and its allies, that were supposed to deify their leaders as gods. For example there are many museums to the leader Kim Il Sung in DPR(North)Korea.
Here in Wichita, KS we have similar public art to remind us who are real leaders are. Our local corporations really believe they our people, (that is what the Supreme Court said). As capitalist deities they seem to find it necessary to build monuments to themselves. The recent one is a light-up-giant cog looking design dedicated to the Wichita Rotary Club and the Coleman Co. It seems W.C. Coleman, and his son, Sheldon Coleman, devoted 103 years to the Rotary Club of Wichita and both served as presidents.
The $1.18 million project includes a huge parking lot put in to replace the down town Coleman Building near 2nd and St. Francis. The Wichita Rotary Charitable Fund donated $300,000 to move and display this monument to their own greatness. According to The Wichita Eagle, County officials wanted to remember downtown’s history. To do that they took bricks and pieces from the old building to build the monument.

In this time of class war, where the Occupy Wichita movement and other Occupy movements across the country are complaining that these corporations are waging class war on the majority of us, including the working poor, this monument is one more reminder who really owns this city and its governments, both city and Sedgwick County. Sedgwick Country took part in the big tower’s dedication.
So when do we create a monument to the dedication of the hard working people who keep these corporations in business instead of waging a class war on them? Apparently it will be no time in the near future.

People fight over everything these days, especially around Christmas. These days "happy holidays" are fighting words for Christians who fear that people are trying to secularize their national holiday. Christmas is a national holiday by law.
Letters start to arrive at the local newspaper The Wichita Eagle, slamming those in businesses who won’t say "Merry Christmas" instead of "Happy Holidays."
They fight over Xmas vs. Christmas. They think the X is an attempt to secularize their holiday. This is wrong. According to Wikipedia, the "X" actually comes from the Greek letter Chi, which is the first letter of the Greek word for "Christ."
One of the biggest problems for modern conservative Christians is that they live in a country where an increasing number of non-Christians practice their religion. Everyone knows that Hanukkah is a jewish holiday that happens to come around the same time as Christmas. There are pagans, wiccans and some agnostics who celebrate the Winter Solstice and they customs are mostly the same as Christmas. The Winter Solstice comes a few days before Christmas. Some Bhudists feel they have the right to celebrate any religious holiday with their family. There is a growing Muslim community and they are often met with hostility from conservative Christians. A good example was the presure put on Lowe’s to pull its ads from the TV show All-American Muslim.

The bottom line is that this is a country of different religions, some celebrate our national holidays and some don’t. For those who celebrate Christmas, or a similar holiday in the same season, this is a good time to respect those of different beliefs and celebrate what makes us alike rather than obsessing with forcing beliefs on others.

Each year my family gets together as almost all families do for Thanksgiving. It’s one of those occasions when we see some relatives, (along with Christmas) only one or two times a year.
Of all the traditional holidays this is probably one of the most controversial. Vegans and animal rights organizations don’t believe in a holiday that revolves around tortured or murdered animals. Then there is the Native American Indian issue. It is a big one. Consider an article written by Mike Ely of the Kasama Project called
Original Occupation: Native Blood & the Myth of Thanksgiving;
“Every schoolchild in the U.S. has been taught that the Pilgrims of the Plymouth Colony invited the local Indians to a major harvest feast after surviving their first bitter year in New England.
Here is the true story of that Thanksgiving — a story of murder and theft, of the first “corporations” invented on North American soil, of religious fundamentalism and relentless mania for money..”
The article is well documented and most of what it says is true. Other writers have also mocked the idea of Thanksgiving and accuse it of being a celebration of genocide. William S. Burroughs gave a speech critical of the unfair treatment of Indians, in A Thanksgiving Prayer.
Also the holiday today is much different than the one first celebrated near Plymouth in 1621. It was a three day celebration with fish and dear. Maybe some wild turkeys were eaten, but not pumpkin pie or Cranbury sauce. It was not held on the day we now celebrate it in November, although it was held in the fall. It was not until December 26, 1941 that a unified date for the whole country, was set on the fourth Thursday (and not always final) in November—by federal legislation.
Still it’s hard to tell most of our relatives that we can’t join them for Thanksgiving because it is politically incorrect. Maybe some day we will simply say that this is a day to be thankful for the food we have and stop celebrating the Indian genocide. Until then many of us will go visit relatives, eat a big meal, some will watch football and others will get drunk. It’s hard to tell a lot of the older people they have been celebrating a bloody myth all these years. So I remind people about the true meaning of Thanksgiving—killing off Native American Indians—in my writings and I will visit my relatives and try to just keep the peace in my family.

An Andover teacher shared photos of 9/11, aftermath with his students. The Wichita Eagle printed a story from those in this area who helped with the rescue efforts in New York that day..

Every year, around Wichita, people kill water snakes of various types and claim they just killed a Water Moccasin in Kansas. Or they may have found a whole bunch of them on a certain creak bead. The fact is that Water Moccasins are rare in Kansas and found only in the far south east. Yet people will swear they have seen or killed them.
Nearly all snakes are becoming extremely rare in Wichita and Sedgwick County. Snakes are losing their habitat, yet at the same time, lakes are being built around new homes and that provides many with one more place to live.
But reality is that there are a number of harmless water-snakes that look just like a Water Moccasin and are often mistaken for them, according to The Kansas School Naturalist Emporia State University.There are a number of poison snakes to be found here in Kansas. In the eastern part of the state there are copperheads. I’ve seen one myself. There are a number of Rattlesnakes found in Kansas. The massasauga rattle snake is also found in the eastern woodlands and I have found those. Most of the other rattlers live far out on the prairie miles from Wichita.

The big differences between the non-poisonous snakes and the poisonous are that the more dangerous have cat pupils. The harmless have round eyes. Most poison snakes are pit vipers, so they have two small pits between their eyes and nostrils. The poison snakes have a double row of scales on the bottom of their tails while the safe ones have only one.
Most water snakes eat small fish and frogs and don’t bother people swimming. Unless the swimmer picks them up they will ignore people. Their bites can break the skin but are harmless.
Common people are not the only ones who mistake water snakes for water moccasins. ABC news showed a water snake that they believed was a water moccasin. They should know better.

We will not educate ourselves about the disease, or reform drug laws that plunge addicts into a shadow-world of criminality and dependence on criminals. Winehouse got away with too much said one copper, after a tape of her using was released. Did she? Did she really? Winehouse walked barefoot through the streets because that is where the drugs were, and even as her bewildered face splatters across the front pages, drug support charities are closing, expendable in this era of thrift.

Would she make it to 28 and be shut out? No, she got in, with 54 days to spare.

The River Festival has always been a kind of commercial extravaganza for local businesses who want to get their name and wares displayed in a large crowd. There’s still a river run that a local bank puts on.
And yet we can’t really blame the city for wanting to put on an event that draws people from miles around to visit an enjoy Wichita.
I’ve complained about various aspects of the festival in the past, but as with the Grinch, I don’t want to steal fun away from the families and the people who actually do enjoy this festival.
On the positive side, they put more events closer to the river. They want people to appreciate the river even it if is too polluted to use for actual events, such as the old bathtub races.
But our city officials always come up with something stupid to mess up an event. This year they moved it from May to June because a few events got rained out in May. Now it is in June and this year we have had triple digit temperatures which are normally rare for this time of the year. Monday through Wednesday was about 100° plus.

How many of us really want to check out the food court and the concerts when the temperatures are at such a dangerous level. Even our kids should not spend much time in this heat.
Last year I heard complaints that people who go to the music concerts are usually crammed into an area open to the hot sun where they can’t bring in their own drinks. They have to buy overpriced bottled water and other refreshments from venders there. They can’t even bring their own water. Many young people I know just don’t go and that was last year when the temperatures weren’t as bad.
The high temperatures could be global warming, but it is way too early to tell. If this happens five years in a row, we will know something is wrong. For this year it may just be bad luck. But the festival is still being held at a really bad time period.

Gov. Sam Brownback is trying to cut all funding to the Kansas Arts Commission. He seems to want to put a complete end to publicly funded art and replace it with corporate funded art.
He has already announced that its five employees will lose their jobs, according to The Wichita Eagle. Brownback has made no effort to hide his plans to completely de-fund public art in Kansas.
The Kansas legislature, both the house and senate are dominated by Republicans and many are in agreement with Brownback. However some would like to designate $689,000 in the next budget to keep the commission alive, but Brownback is expected to line-item veto that proposal.
Brownback wants to replace the KAC with a non-profit foundation financed by private donations. Such donations often come from corporations who want their logo on everything.
The US is flooded with corporate funding, which usually shows up as corporate logo or name on items somewhere. We just got a new arena in Wichita and it is named after a bank because that bank gave the city some money for the privilege of getting that name on the building.

Traditional art, which goes back to ancient civilizations, is disappearing from the US and most of our artistic talents now go to commercial enterprises and corporate logos. Italy has the Sistine Chapel, and as a friend pointed out, the US has golden arches. Andy Warhol became an important artist by showing us what our culture really looks like. It is obsessed with movie stars and corporate labels.
We need public art to allow our own unique culture to develop without economic interference. This is one place where corporations don’t belong. Ants, bees and termites build structures for them to live in. Termites build mounds that resemble small buildings. None of these insects have art, despite their well organized societies. We are not insects and art separates us from the purely utilitarian nature of such bugs.

While Carl Hall may a nice guy and deserving of a new house, this show his given free houses to people who could afford to replace their own. Extreme Makeover came in 2005 and built a new home for one that exploded for Kevin and Cathy Nutsch, from Derby. After getting all the free help it turned out they owned prime real estate downtown where they were planning to build the new stadium. Surely there were some actual needy people the show could have helped.
Then there the free materials and volunteers they use to put up these houses. According to The Wichita Eaglethere were about 2,800 people this Sunday alone, who volunteered, wearing blue T-shirts, which I’m sure had the show’s logo on it (free advertising).
It nice that the show does these wonderful things for people who need better homes, but why do they need to come to town and hustle our people for free labor and materials when they make so much money on TV with ads? With all the TV network makes can’t it afford to pay anyone?
This is just one more reality show run by people who know they can find people who want to be on TV and meet celebrities. All they need is a lot of speeches on “giving back to community” as an excuse as to why the volunteers did it without pay. The same old TV scam since reality shows started to flood the airwaves.

Everyone has a worst entertainer they despise. Mine is the comic Adam Sandler. They bastard is not funny, but that’s not all. He was the least favorite comedian (downright annoying) on Saturday Night Live.

His humor is similar to what I performed when I was nine. Not many laughed at it then and today even I don’t think it is funny. So why is it funny when Adam Sandler says it? For me it’s not. Even when he pulls off a good performance in a movie, I still hate him. In many of his movies he is a “man-child” and adolescence child living as a full grown man. NOT FUNNY! I could go back to that stupid juvenile humor, but I won’t. I’d rather be an unfunny nobody than a jerk the rips his shtick off little kids.

The US just doesn’t do enough to include Native American culture. We have the Crazy Horse Memorial. We now have coins with Indians on them. We started with the Sacagawea dollar. Now they have a new coin minted to honour the role of the Native Americans. We have had Indians on our coins before, but Sacagawea has an actual name. The Indian head nickel and half and quarter eagles seemed to have an Indian on them, but they were not famous individuals.

Mexican coins have had the face of Cuauhtemocs on it. However it is only recently that the US mint took Native Americans seriously. In times passed they put an Indian bonnet on a liberty face as in the 1cent piece and the Gold Eagle $10. សតិវ អតុ

I’ve invented a new calendar. It is really just the same calendar we all use today except I use the year Great Leader or GL 56. That’s because my birthday is this weekend, so to sell-a-brate I’m selling a new calendar. I got the idea from Democratic People’s Republic of (North) Korea. They have their own calendar based on the life of Kim Il Sung. The year there is January 11. 2011 Juche 100. So in my calendar the year would be Jan. 11, 2011 GL 56. Each page will have my great accomplishments, such as the time I single-handedly lead a group of students to take over WSU to protest the Vietnam War when I was only 13. It is now 1-1-11 or 1-1-2011. I had a shitty New Year's Eve. Wife got sick, no tea, very little liquor...all I did was light fireworks. I Chickened out from going to the only party I got invited to. The highlights of my night were lighting off a few firecrackers. Weeeee!

Today I watched "Leave it to Beaver" because sport shows are all that is on TV. I don't like sports or infomercials.
The new year is getting off to a GREAT start.

This may suck today...but in 1968 it was the top song of the year. We've had better since that year, but not this year.

The New year, years, what ever….
The Gregorian calendar, also known as the Western calendar or the Christian calendar, is the internationally accepted civil calendar. It was introduced by Pope Gregory XIII, after whom the calendar was named, by a decree signed on 24 February 1582, a papal bull known by its opening words Inter gravissimas.The reformed calendar was adopted later that year by a handful of countries, with other countries adopting it over the following centuries. The motivation for the Gregorian reform was that the Julian calendar assumes that the time between vernal equinoxes is 365.25 days, when in fact it is about 11 minutes less. The accumulated error between these values was about 10 days when the reform was made, resulting in the equinox occurring on March 11 and moving steadily earlier in the calendar. Since the equinox was tied to the celebration of Easter, the Roman Catholic Church considered that this steady movement was undesirable.

The North Korean government and associated organizations use a variation of the Gregorian calendar with a Juche year based on April 15, 1912 AD, the date of birth of Kim Il-sung, as year 1. The calendar was introduced in 1997. Months are unchanged from those in the standard Gregorian calendar. In many instances, the Juche year is given after the AD year, for example, 27 June 2007 Juche 96. But in North Korean publications, the Juche year is usually placed before the corresponding AD year, as in Juche 96 (2007).^[31] Calendar schemes based on political era are also found in the Japanese era name (Nengo) system and in the Minguo calendar used in the Republic of China (Taiwan), though these are not based on the birth of an individual as in the Gregorian and Juche calendars. Incidentally, the year numbers of the Juche calendar, Minguo calendar, and Japan's Taishō period correspond to each other even though they were not meant to be related. On 2011/1/1, N. Korea will also face the Y1C Problem.
In August 1997 the Central People's Committee of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea promulgated regulations regarding use of the Juche Era calendar, according to which for dates occurring before 1912 the Gregorian calendar year is used exclusively, so that there is no "negative" Juche year, or "Before Juche" concept. For example, 1682 is rendered as "1682", while 2010 is rendered as "Juche 99, 2010" or as "Juche 99 (2010)."^[32] Critics of Juche charge that the "Juche dating system", as it is based on a person's birth date rather than a political era, reflects a dynastic tradition where era names are specified for ruling Emperors.

On 21 February 1911, the second Persian parliament adopted as the official calendar of

the Jalālī solar calendar with months bearing the names of the twelve constellations of the zodiac and the years named for the animals of the duodecennial cycle; it remained in use until 1925.^[6] The present Iranian calendar was legally adopted on 31 March 1925, under the early Pahlavi dynasty. The law said that the first day of the year should be the first day of spring in "the true solar year", "as it has been" (کماکان). It also fixed the number of days in each month, which previously varied by year with the tropical zodiac. It revived the ancient Persian names, which are still used. It specified the origin of the calendar (Hegira of Muhammad from Mecca to Medina in 622 CE). It also deprecated the 12-year cycles of the Chinese-Uighur calendar which were not officially sanctioned but were commonly used.
The first six months (Farvardin–Shahrivar) have 31 days, the next five (Mehr–Bahman) have 30 days, and the last month (Esfand) has 29 days or 30 days in leap years. The reason the first six months have 31 days and the rest 30 may have to do with the fact that the sun moves slightly more slowly along the ecliptic in the northern spring and summer than in the northern autumn and winter (the time between the vernal equinox and the autumnal equinox is about 186 days and 10 hours, the opposite duration about 178 days, 20 hours).
The Solar Hejri calendar (Persian: گاهشماری هجری خورشیدی یا هجری شمسی) produces a five-year leap year interval after about every seven four-year leap year intervals. It usually follows a 33-year cycle with occasional interruptions by single 29-year or 37-year subcycles. By contrast, some less accurate predictive algorithms are suggestion based on confusion between average tropical year (365.2422 days, approximated with near 128-year cycles or 2820-year great cycles) and the mean interval between spring equinoxes (365.2424 days, approximated with a near 33-year cycle).
In 1976, Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi changed the origin of the calendar, using the birth of Cyrus as the first day, rather than the Hejra of Muhammad. Overnight, the year changed from 1355 to 2535. The change did not last however as it was "largely ignored".^[7]

In Afghanistan

Afghanistan legally adopted the official Jalali calendar in 1922^[6] but with different month names. The Persian language in Afghanistan uses Arabic names of the zodiac signs. The Pashto language in Afghanistan uses the Pashto names of the zodiac signs. The Persian calendar is the official calendar of the government of Afghanistan, and all national holidays and administrative issues are fixed according to the Persian calendar.

Details of the modern calendar

The Solar Hejri calendar year begins at the start of Spring in the northern hemisphere: on the midnight between the two consecutive solar noons which include the instant of the Northern spring equinox, when the sun enters the northern hemisphere. Hence, the first noon is on the last day of one calendar year and the second noon is on the first day (Nowruz) of the next year.

This recent 4 coin set from North Korea includes the aluminum 5, 10, 50 and 100 Won. Christmas wasn’t a major Christian holiday until the Roman Empire adopted Christianity. They didn’t know exactly when Jesus Christ was born so they chose December 25 because it was close to the pagan celebration Sol Invictus.

This holiday was to celebrate the Winter Solstice. It was a major holiday, so it was easy to just change its name and keep many of the customs, some of which we have today. In addition, each country or tribes in Europe contributed something from their own solstice celebration.

Mistletoe was considered sacred by the Druids of Ireland and England. They believed it had magic powers. It was later adopted by the Christian Church, In the York cathedral the minister placed the branch on the High Altar and proclaimed “public and universal liberty, pardon and freedom of all sorts of inferior and wicked people at the minster gates, and the gates of the city, towards the four quarters of heaven.”

Santa Claus comes from a variety of persons with different clothing and names from all over Europe.

The American Santa is a product of a blend of many different cultures and customs. His earliest ancestors date back to pre-Christian days, when sky-riding gods ruled the earth. The mythological characters Odin, Thor, and Saturn gave us the basis for many of Santa's characteristics.

His suite was not always red. He was not always fat. He had many means of travel.

According to THE MAKING OF SANTA CLAUS;

“After the Protestant Reformation in the sixteenth century, the feasting and veneration of Catholic saints were banned. But people had become accustomed to the annual visit from their gift-giving saint and didn't want to forget the purpose of the holiday. So in some countries, the festivities of St. Nicholas' Day were merged with Christmas celebrations, and although the gift-bearer took on new, non-religious forms, he still reflected the saints generous spirit.

In Germany, he appeared as Weihnachtsmann, in England as Father Christmas, and in France, as Pèrè Noël, who left small gifts in the children's shoes.”

Where ever our traditions come from it really does not matter. People can attach Christian meaning to all these symbols if they so desire. Non-Christians can choose to celebrate the Solstice. Either way this is the holiday season and many of us will take part in some of these customs.

The Puritan colonists of Massachusetts embraced a line from Psalms 2:8.
“Ask of me, and I shall give thee, the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession.”

It is a deep thing that people still celebrate the survival of the early colonists at Plymouth — by giving thanks to the Christian God who supposedly protected and championed the European invasion. The real meaning of all that, then and now, needs to be continually excavated. The myths and lies that surround the past are constantly draped over the horrors and tortures of our present.
Every schoolchild in the U.S. has been taught that the Pilgrims of the Plymouth Colony invited the local Indians to a major harvest feast after surviving their first bitter year in New England. But the real history of Thanksgiving is a story of the murder of indigenous people and the theft of their land by European colonialists–and of the ruthless ways of capitalism.
This piece is intended to be shared at this holiday time. Pass it on. Serve a little truth with the usual stuffing.

In mid-winter 1620 the English ship Mayflower landed on the North American coast, delivering 102 exiles. The original Native people of this stretch of shoreline had already been killed off. In 1614 a British expedition had landed there. When they left they took 24 Indians as slaves and left smallpox behind. Three years of plague wiped out between 90 and 96 percent of the inhabitants of the coast, destroying most villages completely.

Review: Memoirs of a Drugged-Up, Sex-Crazed Yippie

Kansas in the late 1970's was so different from today; the Sunflower State might as well have been located in Holland.
Remember what it was like to share drugs with close friends and complete strangers? Remember when casual sex was so casual you didn't even know your partners name? Remember when the political climate of Kansas came down squarely on the side of tolerance? Remember when your personal philosophy of life was defined by rock lyrics and not a mission statement?
You don't?
Well, Steve Otto does.
In his latest semi-fictional novel, Memoirs Of A Drugged-Up, Sex Crazed Yippie (Authorhouse Press/2005), Otto excavates 1970's counterculture like an archaeologist loving dusting off a Mastodon tusk. In a brisk 349 pages, Otto gives us a lucid look at a Kansas few people remember --- or can't remember due to a plentiful supply of "controlled substances" that were constantly and cheaply available. Characters romp through Wichita, Lawrence and even Sedalia Missouri when a cheap thrill was worth what you paid for it and pleasure was just the flipside of danger.
But to dismiss this book as just another nostalgic stoner reminiscing about the last days of the counter-culture would be a major mistake. Although there is a certain "back-in-the-day" wistfulness about the time before political correctness was a mantra, Otto tempers his dreamy history lesson with brutal honesty.
The narrator of the story --- a composite of just about every old druggie you ever met --- may graphically describe the bliss of mainlining MDA, he also reminds us that brief moment of pleasure most often occurred in a squalid apartment at broken kitchen table next to sink full of dirty dishes.
Like all good storytellers, Otto takes the reader places they've never been before. Like William Burroughs and Charles Bukowsky, Otto sometimes takes you to places you've never really wanted to visit. Yet, Otto makes it worth the trip by including generous portions of political discourse, Cyrenaic philosophy, post-adolescent lust and near-suicidal thrill seeking to keep the narrative moving along like a junkie careening through a police roadblock.
Otto's work is always provocative and this book will undoubtedly draw the wrath of both solid conservatives and neo-feminists. Otto's characters never mask their contempt for the right-wing agenda and Otto's narrator never hides his obsession with female anatomy. However, criticizing Memoirs because it baits conservatives and objectifies women is missing the point. Filtering 1970's Kansas counterculture through the sensibilities of a naive middle-class, catholic school educated, twenty-something is no easy trick but Otto mostly pulls it off. He has a good ear for times-past and tries --- often successfully --- to make his prose read like it would have been written by someone experiencing these situations 30 years ago. Trying to be simultaneously innovative, entertaining and honest is a juggling act on a unicycle, but Otto is generally at his best when everything's up-in-the-air and he's peddling frantically. When the narrator's budding Marxist politics and his discussions with Iranian nationalists clash with his dawning awareness that Kansas politics has taken a sharp turn to the right, Otto makes it work.
Is Otto's look into the rear-view mirror a true reflection on the 70's, or do the objects simply appear bigger than they were? Ultimately, it doesn't matter. Memoirs resonates with characters buckling under the weight of the America Dream with redemption harder to find than next snort of Cocaine.

Nudists fight for bare essentials as swingers invade holiday colony

To make a French nudist blush might appear to be a mission impossible. Not at Cap d'Agde, on the Languedoc coast, home to "naked city", Europe's largest nudist holiday colony.

A long-simmering war between two tribes of the unclothed – "traditional" nudists and so-called "libertines" or exponents of free sex – exploded into a public protest at the town's council meeting this week.

Old-fashioned naturists have been complaining for years that Cap d'Agde's once-sedate nudist quarter has been disfigured by an influx of partner-swapping clubs and raunchy hotels. A flurry of arson attacks on sex clubs two years ago was blamed on low-level terrorism by nudist fundamentalists.

At this week's Cap d'Agde council meeting, the protests took a more peaceful form. Old-fashioned nudists complained that they, and their children, were being confronted with "voyeurist" and "exhibitionist" behaviour, including sexual acts in public. Worse, they suggested, the "deviant" newcomers sometimes walked about in their clothes and mocked the "real" nudists.

Florence Denestebe, an independent local councillor, said: "When the sun shines, there is an area of Cap d'Agde which turns into the European capital of free sex."

She asked the town's mayor, and MP, Gilles d'Ettore, to intervene before Cap d'Agde's "oversexed" image caused an "explosion of libertine behaviour in non-nudist areas" of the town.

About 30 traditional nudists (fully dressed) applauded her words from the public gallery. One said: "We bought a flat here 34 years ago because we wanted to live naked, to live with the sun. We wanted a natural life. Now, we are surrounded by wild animals."

Another protester said: "There are often more people walking around dressed than undressed... If you are just an ordinary nudist, they stare at you as if you were something bizarre."

The "Village Naturiste" at Cap d'Agde, established 40 years ago, attracts up to 40,000 tourists at one time. Sometimes called "Naked City", it has its own two kilometre-long beach, port and marina, fenced off from the rest of the town. The village has nudist camp sites, apartments, a hotel, shops, restaurants, bars, hairdressers and even a nudist post office and bank.

In the last decade, the village has been colonised by sex clubs and partner-swapping apartment complexes with names like Les Jardins d'Eden or Les Jardins du Babylon.

Deirdre Morrissey, a journalist who visited the resort for the Irish Independent last year, said rules had been relaxed to allow an invasion by the "libertine movement" for "commercial purposes". "Libertines believe in pure hedonism, including exhibitionism, as we discovered when we sampled the nightlife," she wrote.

"Over our après-dinner cappuccino, we were a little surprised to see a buffed-up guy dressed in a police uniform mincing around the seating area of the restaurant bothering the patrons. [He ended by] thrusting his naked bits at a pair of female diners, like some sort of bizarre, hedonistic digestif."

Mr d'Ettore said yesterday that he would consider the complaints but had already done all he could to keep the two tribes from each other's throats. By-laws had been passed to ban minors from the raunchier establishments. The protesters were not necessarily representative, he said. There had been no formal complaints this summer.

"We didn't invent partner-swapping or libertine behaviour in Cap d'Agde. This has been a social trend for 10 years," the centre-right mayor and parliamentary deputy said. "I refuse to make value judgements on the sexual habits of other people. I can't put a policeman behind all 40,000 nudists."
